Understanding Ghunna in Quran Recitation

A Morning Conversation Between Yusuf and His Father

One day, after waking up and getting ready for school, Yusuf had a conversation with his father.

Father: My awesome kid, did you read the morning supplication today?

Yusuf: I did, Dad.

Father: (Smiling) MashaAllah. Could you read it out loud? I want to listen to your voice.

Yusuf: Sure, Dad.

As Yusuf was finishing his Azkar, reciting Surat Al-Nas:

Yusuf: قل أعوذ برب الناس ملك الناس اله الناس

Father: Why don’t you do the ghunna?

Yusuf: But Dad, what do you mean by ghunna?

Father: Oh my son, don’t you know about ghunna? No worries at all. Ghunna is a nasal twang that comes from the nose. If you hold your nose, you won’t be able to produce this sound. Try it.

Yusuf: Yeah, I couldn’t do it. But Dad, should I make ghunna with all the letters?

Father: That’s what I was about to explain, my intelligent son. Listen, Yusuf, ghunna applies only to two letters: noon and meem mushaddad, which have a shaddah sign. Whenever you see a noon or meem with a shaddah, you have to make ghunna, a nasal twang you can pick up from your teacher.

Yusuf: I got it, Dad. I have a question. Sometimes I stop on the noon or meem letter, and they have a shaddah. Should I skip ghunna or do it?

Father: Ghunna must be applied whether you stop or not. Now, can you recite Surat Al-Nas again, making the ghunna on the noon or meem with a shaddah?

Yusuf: Sure, my lovely father.
