The Five Letters of Qalqalah
Qalqalah consists of five specific letters: ق – ط – ب – ج – د.
A Fun Day Out and a Riddle
After the Eagles team won the competition, their teacher decided to reward them with a trip to Niagara Falls on Tuesday. On a sunny day, Yusuf woke up, prepared his food and drinks, took a shower, and headed to school. There, he met his friend Omar, who posed a riddle:
Omar: What goes to bed with its shoes on?
Yusuf: (Laughing) Do you mean an animal?
Omar: Hahahaha, yes!
Yusuf: An elephant?
Omar: No, it’s a horse! Hahahahahaha.
They laughed together.
The Importance of Duaa for Travel
Teacher: Guys, get on the bus and don’t forget the duaa for getting into the vehicle.
All the students looked at each other, whispering, “Is there a duaa for getting into the vehicle?”
Teacher: Oh, repeat after me then:
سبحان الذى سخر لنا هذا وما كنا له مقرنين
Introduction to Qalqalah
Youssef: Teacher, I noticed you make an echo or vibration with the letter “baa.” Is it on purpose?
Teacher: Yes, it is. This is one of the Tajweed rules called Qalqalah. It means echo or vibration. Who knows the letters of Qalqalah?
Ihab: I think the letters are: ق – ط – ب – ج – د.
Teacher: MashaAllah, Ihab. These letters are collected in the phrase قطب جد.
Conditions for Qalqalah
Teacher: Should Qalqalah happen with all the letters of قطب جد, or do they need something specific?
Youssef: I noticed that the letters you make Qalqalah with have a sukoon.
Teacher: Correct! Qalqalah should only occur with letters that have a sukoon or when you stop on them.
Levels of Qalqalah
Ali: Teacher, are there any levels or degrees of Qalqalah?
Teacher: Yes, Ali. You deserve candy for that question! There are three levels of Qalqalah:
Weak Qalqalah
When the Qalqalah letter is in the middle of a word, like in:
- الأبتر
- اقرأ
- أدراك
Strong Qalqalah
When the Qalqalah letter is at the end of a word without a shaddah, like in:
- ولم يولد

The Strongest Qalqalah
