Look at the book of hadith in Musnad al-Bazzar, which narrates Sad ibn Abi Waqqas said the prophet Muhammad-may Allah’s peace be upon him—said, “One of its blessings and pleasures is to seek divine guidance from Allah and to be satisfied after the decree of fate, and one of its deprivation and unpleasures is to abandon seeking divine guidance and to be displeased after the decree of fate.”

Al-Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim said,
Allah gave us Istikhara Dua instead of seeking goodness and decision through divining arrows (grave disobedience)

“اللهم اني أستخيرك بعلمك واستقدرك بقدرتك وأسألك من فضلك العظيم فإنك تقدر ولا أقدر وتعلم ولا أعلم و أنت علام العيوب اللهم إن كنت تعلم أن هذا الامر خير لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمري أو قال في عاجل أمري وءاجله فاقدره لي ويسره لي وإن كنت تعلم أن هذا الأمر شر لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمرى أو قال في عاجل أمري وءاجله فاصرفه عني واصرفني عنه واقدر لي الخير حيث كان ثم رأضني به” (رواه البخاري)
“Allahumma ine astkhirk belmik wastqdiruk beqodrtik wasaluk min fadlik al-azeem fennak tqdr wla aqdr wtalam wla alam w ant alam alghuoob Allahoma in knt talam anna haza al-amr khair lee fe deene w mashee w aqibat amree aw qal ajel amree w ajelh faqdrh lee wyasirh lee w in knt talam anna haza al-amr shar lee fe deenee w mashee w aqibat amree aw qal ajel amree w ajelh fsrifh annee w srfnee anho wqdr lee al-khair hyth kan thmma ardene behe
Translation of Istikhara du’a into English
O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge and power and ask You for Your great grace. For you are capable, and I am not; you know, and I do not; You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs, or if it is good for my present and future, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. But if you know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs, or if it is bad for my present and future, then remove it from me, and remove me from it. And ordain for me what is best, wherever it may be, and make me content.”
